Become Number 1 on Google Fast and Easy!

Tags: , , , ,

I got into SEO back in 1998. And I can tell you from experience, it’s changed a lot over the years. Not long ago you could use tricks like keyword spamming and fill META tags with just about anything even close to what was on your page. Even with the simplest tricks you could place highly on Google, Yahoo, and all the other biggies. That’s no longer the case.

Today SEO is about a 75% / 25% split between links and content, with inbound links being the most important thing. Especially on Google. When all is said and done, you can get to the top of Google in just two simple steps. Seriously. I’ve done it hundreds of times and it’s easier than you’d imagine.

Step 1: Develop Great Content

Writing great SEO content is a snap if you follow this simple 5 step formula…

1.) Write naturally as if speaking with a friend. Record yourself actually speaking to a friend about the topic of your Web page and it will all come together automatically.

2.) Limit each page to 2 to 3 keywords or keyword phrases.

3.) Mention each keyword no more than 4 times per page and split the usage somewhat equally between paragraphs. Two mentions of your major keyword in the 1st paragraph is the only real exception. And be sure you mention each toward the end of the page to show overall consistency and topic authenticity.

4.) Try to incorporate the first mention of each keyword into hyperlink anchor text. The link should lead to another page of your own site. (Note: The keyword would then be the clickable text leading to your other page.)

5.) Have between 150 and 250 words of text per keyword. So if you have 3 keywords on one page, you will have about 600 words on that page, in total.

That’s the quick and dirty SEO content writers course. And believe me, it works!

Step 2: Link Like the Pros (Part 1; Strategize)

Linking is a bit more involved. The main thing to remember is that you want as many high quality, topic relevant links as you can get. And you want them all using the same exact URL since Google sees URLs that begin with “http://www” differently than links that begin with just “www”. In other words, even if you have 200 links to your page, if they are split between URL formats, you are not getting full credit for the links.

And forget all that stuff about links to the homepage being “a must.” Sure, having inbound links go to your homepage is great but Google has smartened up. They figure your site overall is probably not that great if nobody bothers linking to your actual content pages. While it’s true that Google ranks pages rather than sites, they do still base each of your page’s worth on its supporting pages.

I won’t bore you with a bunch of techno babble. In short, if you keep this in mind, you’ll always be ahead of the game:

1.) Inbound links should be from pages containing relevant content of a similar nature.

2.) Links to your web pages from outside pages with high Google PageRank (GPR) are most desirable. (Note: GPR is NOT the page’s position on Google. It is a value, from 1 to 10, that Google assigns to all Webpages.)

3.) Links from (not to) a homepage are typically most valuable, unless they have a higher GPR page to link from. Focus on the GPR. If you use software like that mentioned below, it will do all this automatically. If you do it all manually, get the free Google Toolbar from http://toolbar.google.com. GPR is shown for every page (that has any) on the Internet.

4.) Inbound links to your pages should feature your keyword as the anchor text triggering the hyperlink (keyword is the clickable part leading to your page.)

5.) Do NOT use generic text for your link’s surrounding content. Make the sentence as relevant as possible.

6.) Use as many well written versions of your link’s surrounding content as possible so Google doesn’t view your inbound links as duplicate content.

Step 2: Link Like the Pros (Part 2; Do It)

As far as actually getting great links, avoid the automated script based reciprocal link services. A lot of these services link your pages to “gray barred” pages, which means your site can get kicked off Google as well. And to be honest, reciprocal links are not nearly as valuable to Google as they once were, especially the junk link pages most of these services create.

If you want to “set it and forget it” without the problems mentioned above, you might want to try a service like 3-WayLinks.com (http://www.3-WayLinks.com). Although I’m not a fan of any linking service, this one is the best I’ve come across so far. They set it up so your page links to another, which links to a third, which links to you. There is no direct reciprocal beeline back to your page and each link is counted as a one way inbound link by Google, which is the most valuable type of link.

Of course, natural linking is the way to go whenever possible. Google LOVES links that are part of page content (see the anchor text notes above.) And getting great links like this is easier than ever with the right software so don’t sweat the time or effort. Both are minimal.

The product a lot of SEO pros use (myself included) is SEO Elite, available at http://www.SEOeliteWeb.com. It works great as both a full function link building tool and ranking checker for all major search engines. Even if you don’t need the app, take advantage of the free videos on the site. They explain special linking considerations, like special reserved commands such as “allinanchor” and how to find Google “Authority sites.” You can still benefit from the information, even without the tool.

Big Tip: When approaching other sites for links, try to get your link as anchor text in the actual page content, or a margin. Also do their link that way and explain the benefits and how much Google loves this type of natural content linking.

So there you have it; everything you need to get your pages on top of Google in record time. Best of luck. You’ll do great!

How to Get Free Google Ads

Tags: ,

Google ads is one of the fastest ways to get targeted traffic to your website in as little as 1 hour. These days google always introduce strict policies, which cripples internet marketers that advertise with them. If you are the type that depends on Google Ads in order to get visitors to your website, that means you would always be affected by their policies if you are not playing your cards well.

Google Ads at times are very expensive, if you are not careful you could invest all your money advertising there without making back your capital. Google bids fluctuate at times, kicking you in and out of your target position. One of the ways to get free google ads is to always watch out for their free coupon codes that they give out to their members regularly. You can always find them from a google adword blog or similar websites, bear in mind that google won’t ever put that free coupon code notice on their website. It’s your duty to search for it, if you are lucky, you could get an email containing their coupon code. So always check both your inbox and bulks or trash in case you receive any of these coupons.

Apart from getting free google ads, there is another way to make back your google adwords expenditure. It’s a method that requires common sense and effective application of guidelines. With this method, you would be able to save some money and reduce the amount of money google makes daily. This is a method that involves google adsense, in case you don’t know what google adsense is all about. It’s a google type of advertising method which requires you to place a google code on your website to display targeted ads on it and in return google pays you per click on the ads they display on your page and also per impression. With this technique, you would be able to make money from google adsense and use it for your google adwords advertisement. Though this might drive away visitors from patronizing your own product, there is another way to go around this in order to make sure you don’t lose your customers to google, that’s a million dollar answer which I won’t be able to reveal in this article, various people from around the world are benefiting from this technique. It’s rather to use this technique to cut your google ads costs instead of receiving google slaps which they normally give out to their customers whenever they change their policies.

GetGoogleAdsFree is a website that shows the complete step by step on how you can get free google ads. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a way to minimize your spending on ppc. Check it out at http://mkbiz.freegoogle.hop.clickbank.net/?tid=AB

Google AdSense Referral System

Tags: , , ,

Recently, Google has declared a referral system called Google AdSense Referral System as its intended ad delivery system. Even though this news was declared in January 2008, some folks are not aware of the changes made by Google. However, Google had already informed people by sending emails to its customers.

Google realized that the Google AdSense Referral System was not working adequate for them. Hence, they decided to trash their referral system for people outside North America, Latin America, and Japan. Thus, this would sound surprising to you if you live in North America, Japan or Latin America. However, Google is planning to reduce their payment structures to great levels as that of earlier years.

Thus, you can now earn $100.00, when your referrals make $100.00. Of course, this is somewhat a drop from the earlier days, but to certain extent, you can make good amount of money from this referral system. Today, many people desire referring to large number of referrals to Google advertising programs, so that when they make sales, they can see some amount of money in their pocket. In addition, one gets $1.00 for each new user of Firefox plus Google Toolbar, based on the users’ location.

Taking Advantage of Referral System:

The Google AdSense Referral System offers a new income opportunity while raising the user’s awareness of promotional products or services. Inserting a referral button on your web site, enables you to generate extra income by directing your users to sign up or download products such as Adwords or AdSense.

If you cite a new promoter who signs up for AdSense and promotes products or services through your referral, he/she will earn a payment of $100 and eventually Google credits your account with $100.

To earn extra income from this affiliate program, you first need to be a Google AdSense promoter. There is more likelihood to be a short time between folks signing up and you being compensated, since it takes beginners a short time to earn $100.

Instructions to Set Up a Referral System:

To take part in the AdSense Referral program, you need to consider the following instructions:

1. Log on to your Google AdSense account.

2. Visit the Referral button.

3. Choose a language from the menu drop-down list, which you will use for referral.

4. Choose the sub-button of the intended product you would like to refer, for instance, Firefox plus Google Toolbar or AdSense.

5. Select the button referral that you would like to keep on your web site and copy the same code from the resource box to the left side of your intended selection.

6. Paste that referral code into HTML source code of your web site.

7. The referral key you have inserted begins emerging on your web page within a moment.

The bottom line is that, you can refer other people to promote products of Google such as Google Adwords or Google AdSense for them to earn additional income, at the comfort zone of your home.

Find Real Estate Deals in Google

Tags: , , , ,

With Google you can run advertising campaigns on what is called ‘Google Adwords’. If you go to Google and search for anything you’ll see that there are listings down the side of the page and a couple at the top. These are paid advertisements. Go to Google and search the words sell my house adding your city to the search term first.

Ex: ‘Charlotte Sell My House’. Look at the different ads of local realtors and investors selling property. You can also search other keywords and include your city name. Keywords like, foreclosure, Buy my house, sell house fast, etc. Simply go to Google and set up an account to run your ad and when the user clicks on your link it will take them to your website. If you don’t have a website you can get a generic website very cheap but remember that you get what you pay for. If you get a generic website then you’ll be very limited in how you can customize it. The neat thing about Google is that you can set a daily and monthly budget. You can also set it up so that your ads will only show if someone in your area is searching for your particular keywords.

If you are in Orlando, FL, you may only want people who live within 50 miles to see your Google ad so if anyone further away searches, your ad won’t appear and that’ll save you money. You pay based on cost per click, not if they buy anything or sign up for more information. This is why it’s important to make sure you have a website that will capture their information before they leave. Google Adsense Google Adsense is another type of Google advertising. Have you ever visited a website and seen the ads down one side that reads; ads sponsored by Google? These are adsense advertisers. You set it up the same way but you specify that you want it to be put on other related websites. You can still select a geographic area so you aren’t wasting money. Google Search This method of locating properties actually qualifies for 4-5 methods. I’m mentioning it because with Google advertising, it is marketing.

There’s so much more to Google. You can Google anything. Think about how you could find motivated sellers, where you could market your properties, how you could build your buyers list of investors, how you could build your dream team, find local attorneys, appraisers, rehab contractors, etc. Here are a few samples of searches you could do to find all of these above ‘Free Real Estate Ads’ ‘Free Real Estate Listings’ ‘Sell my house’ ‘Buy My House’ ‘Foreclosure Listings’ ‘Investors Club’ ‘Investor Loans’ ‘Hard Money Loans’ ‘Find contractors’ ‘Find Attorneys’ ‘Find Appraisers’ ‘Find Local Realtors’, etc. You can also add your location in front of any of these searches to localize your search. Remember, you don’t have to know how to spell because anything spelled incorrectly, Google will ask you ‘Did You Mean?’.

Google Alerts Google Alerts is a FREE service provided by Google that allows you to list certain keywords and when something is posted to the internet, Google will send you an email with a link to the page. I have an alert on my name so anytime someone posts anything about me, I know about it. Let’s look at how you could use this as a real estate investor. What if you set up an alert with your location and keywords you’d use in searching for a property? Here are a couple examples: Charlotte Fixer Upper, Charlotte handyman special, Charlotte foreclosure or Charlotte motivated seller. The list could go on and on.

Dominate Google Rankings Quick and Easy!

Tags: , , , ,

Does dominating Google rankings quick and easy sound too good to be true? It really isn’t. Following are a bunch of surefire SEO tips that have kept hundreds of my client’s sites on top of Google for years, with new ones every month.

There’s a lot to cover and I hate long articles that drone on so I’ll keep the info short and sweet. Let’s start with the domain name.

Domain Names

Age: Make sure your domain name is at least six months old. If it’s more than a year old, that’s even better. Google often (but not always) likes domains to be at least six months old before indexing the site. How do they know? They use a “whois” database like the one at:

http://www.AllWhoIs.com.

Go there and enter your domain if you want to see what Google (and anyone else in the world) can instantly know about your site.

TLD Type: TLD stands for Top Level Domain, which is to say the letters after the dot. The best ones to have are “.com, .net. .org and .edu.” These get the most play in Google’s top 3 rankings for just about every keyword you can imagine, with “.com” and “.edu” being the best.

Embedded Keywords: If you have your main keyword (and ONLY your main keyword) as a dotcom domain name with even just halfway decent page text and some good inbound links you can usually nail number one on Google for that keyword. I’ve done it dozens of times. It’s a no brainer.

Dashes: Having a dash in your domain name might be bad for branding but it can open whole new doors of opportunity for your search engine optimization efforts. You see Google treats a dash as a null value (almost like a space) and can take them or leave them with equal indifference. So if your main keyword phrase is a few words long, you can place a dash between each word. If that’s taken, just try one dash separating the first and second words but leave the second and third word grouped together. You get the idea. Just keep trying combinations until you have one that works and scoop up the domain. Even if you sit on it for six months, you’ll have it when you want it.

Now on to the next big item; keywords. The best keyword embedded domain name in the world will mean little if nobody is searching for that keyword. That said; let’s find the best keywords possible for your site. Here’s how…

Keywords:

Keywords in Demand: Let’s snoop into Google’s keyword database and find some winners. Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and enter any keyword or phrase you think your target audience is looking for. Now click on the top header link to sort by desired search volume to see which words get the most searches.

Go Long: And don’t be afraid to use longer keywords as long as they get plenty of searches. Not only will this narrow the tasks of your workload for actual optimization but it will open all kinds of new options for finding great (dash laden) domain names and even help cut back on your competition.

Narrow Your Field: Now take the top ten or so relevant keywords and phrases and list them in order of “Approximate Monthly Searches Performed.” You might want to paste the keyword into one column of a spreadsheet and the number of searches into the next column. This next part takes a bit of math so we might as well let Excel do it.

Competition:

Competition; Less is Better: “Less is better.” Well that’s the understatement of the year. But how do you know how much competition you will be up against? It’s easy. Simple division does the trick nicely. Here’s how…

Google It: Go to Google and paste in your first keyword phrase. Look in the upper right area of the page and see how many pages you will be competing against if you try to optimize for that keyword (Results 1 – 10 of about 123,000,000 for “keyword”.) Now record that number in the cell to the right of “searches performed.” You can go ahead and do the same for each keyword. When you have all the info you need have Excel divide the number of “competing pages” by the number of “searches performed.” The lower the resulting ratio; the better your chances. Your best bet is to take the lowest ratio number with the highest number of “searches performed.” This is your optimal target.

Even More: But we’re not done yet! Now find the next best two runnerup keywords and write them down in order of importance. We’ll need them soon.

Content:

The King Lives!: You’re probably sick of hearing it but content really is king. Developing search engine friendly, well optimized content (for REAL people) is key to your success. Google can read a Web page just like a person thanks to its natural text algorithm. So keyword spamming and robotic writing do not work with Google. But here’s what DOES work…

Keep it Real: Call a close friend and tell him or her exactly what you want to tell your web visitors. Then as quick as you can write it down, as close to “word for word” as you can remember. Just let the words flow. You can fix spelling and grammar later.

Fitting In: Now, with your list of three keywords, go back through your text and fit your most important keyword as close to the beginning of the first sentence as possible. Now go ahead and place your number two keyword someplace else toward the beginning of your first paragraph. Your third keyword should go into the beginning of the second paragraph if possible.

Now use only one of your keywords for each of the next three paragraphs. Try to make them fit naturally toward the beginning sentence or two of each paragraph.

Throw in a Curve: Now use a reverse order for the very last paragraph. Put your least important keyword (number 3 pick) at the beginning of the paragraph and your best keyword at the end. This shows consistency (at least as far as Google is concerned.)

Last but not least, do not repeat any keyword more than three or four times on a page. I stick with a 3 x 3 method and it works great (3 keywords each mentioned 3 times over the course of about 9 paragraphs.)

Getting Links and Monitoring Your Site:

Inbound Links: Having high quality inbound links can account for more than 75% of your search engine ranking success. Getting these links is the crucial step that will get you over the top. At the same time you need to monitor your progress and your site’s status (how search engine REALLY see it). This will tell you not just where you are – but where you are likely to be. In the old days, we had to do all of the link work and monitoring by hand. And believe me, it took a long time (I averaged about 16 hours per week; per site!) My advice is to find a good SEO tool and let it do the tough and repetitive work for you. If you get hold of the right product, it’s the best money you’ll ever spend.

I started out with WebPosition Pro and used it for a couple years but switched to another tool that has automated linking, which I find to be the most time-consuming and now most important aspect of SEO on Google. This was probably a good call since Web Position was recently banned by Google for abuse.

Anyway, here are my results for both…

http://www.SE0elite.com Cost = $167 (lifetime free upgrades and no annual fees)

Personal Results: 121 top 5 rankings on Google in 3 weeks – Mostly 1’s and 2’s. Best Features: Finds best link partners; Automates link process; Finds “Google “authority sites.”

http://www.WebPosition.com Cost = $389 WebPosition Pro or $149 Standard (plus $99 per year subscription fees for either)

Personal Results: 44 top 5 rankings in Google in eight weeks – Mostly 3’s and 4’s. Best Features: Site Monitoring (recently banned by Google); Great reporting; Site Critic

Now you’re ready to dominate Google. Good luck!

How to Rank High in Google Quickly For Your Desired Keywords

Tags: , , , , ,

Like anybody involved in internet marketing and web sites development I also like to rank high in Google search results for the keywords I consider useful after I have done some keywords research.

And like anybody else I know it isn’t that easy to reach this target. Google is the most important search engine of the internet, and the biggest source of traffic existing at the moment. The competition to get good results in the Google search engine is the higher existing too.

So to get these high rankings quickly we need to know, and to do, what Google likes and considers good.

One of the best possible ways is to use the big sites that Google likes a lot and indexes high for all the keywords and add there links to your own web site.

An example is Squidoo, that allows you to create your own pages about the topic you like. Squidoo often ranks high in Google search results for competitive keywords, so you can create your pages on Squidoo, that are called “lenses”, related to your desired keywords, targeting these keywords in the name and URL of the lens, in the text content you add to it, and in the link back to your own web site.

Google also likes a lot the big social networks web sites, like MySpace as example, and having links with your desired keywords to your own web site posted in MySpace can also help a lot your site to get indexed fast by Google and to get higher rankings for your keywords.

Squidoo and MySpace are just two examples of sites that Google loves and that can let you easily add links to your site. It is also important to notice that these sites are very good for anybody that wants to have links from big sites to their new sites because both of them have content about any possible topic, they are very generic sites and have pages about anything you can imagine.

I will show you other good sites, but before I want to give you another good tip that can make the difference.

Having the keywords you are targeting in your domain name can help a lot. If the main domain name composed only by the keywords is not available than you can select a variation of it, perhaps adding another word that gives anyway a meaning to the domain.

Now let’s see some other good sites you can use to rank higher on Google for your desired keywords.

Two possibilities are inside Google itself, or better said inside the Google network. But they could require more work to be successful.

I refer to Blogger and to Youtube, they are both free Google services.

Blogger allows you to create free blogs, and again you can select any topic you like without problem and Google loves blogs. The problem is that a blog must be continually updated to get and keep good rankings in search engines and Google in particular, so this will require more work than a Squidoo lens or a post on a social network.

Youtube also is loved both by Google and internet surfers, but you will need to be able to create a video to use it, than you can add the link inside the video itself to promote your web site to the viewers of the video, and in the description, to be crawled by Google and the other search engines.

The ones above are only some of the big, good sites that can help you a lot to get high rankings quickly for your desired keywords in Google, but there are many others you can find making some researches in Google.

How Google Indexes Your Webpage

Tags: , ,

When understanding how Google indexes webpage’s is to think of the web as a large book and which has an impressive index which identifies where everything is located. When you query a search on Google, it checks their index of webpage’s they have compiled and determines the most relevant search results to be returned back to the user.

The three key processes in delivering search results to you are:

Crawling: Does Google know about your site? Can we find it? Indexing: Can Google index your site? Serving: Does the site have good and useful content that is relevant to the user’s search?

Crawling

Google use a process where automated software known as Googlebot skewers the internet for new and recently updated paged to be added to their index.

Google use a vast set of computers to fetch (or “crawl”) billions of webpage’s. The program which performs this amazing job is known as Googlebot. Other terms it’s also known as are robot, bot or spider. Googlebot uses an algorithmic process: computer programs determine which sites to crawls, how often, and how many pages they fetch from each site.

Indexing

When Googlebot begins to the crawl the internet it starts with a list of URL’s from previous sessions, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters. When Googlebot lands on a page it takes the links from that page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New websites or updates to new ones are noted and updated on the Google index.

The good thing to note here is that you cannot pay Google to crawl a site more frequently and is not part of their revenue generating services.

Googlebot processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of all the words it sees and their location on each page. In addition, Google processes information included in key content tags and attributes, such as Title tags and ALT attributes. Googlebot can process many, but not all, content types. For example, we cannot process the content of some rich media files, dynamic pages or iframes.

Serving results

When you query a search on Google, it takes your query and matches to relevant pages within their index and then displays the results in the order Google feels most benefits your query. Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors, one of which is Pagerank. Pagerank is based on the importance if the incoming Links from other sites. Each link from another site your own contributes to how well your page will rank. But don’t think you can go out and get 1000’s of incoming links by automatically submitting to sites. Not links are equal in Googles eyes. Google is working hard to ensure that you the user are provided the best result for your search by identifying spam links and other practices that have a negative impact on search results. What this means in simple terms, if you have a site which provides information on pet care and products, then your page rank will increase when getting incoming links from websites with similar interests and content.

Before Google can index and rank your site well in search results, you need to ensure that Googlebot can crawl and index your site properly. Broken and dead links will have a negative impact on how your site ranks. It’s important to ensure that you use Google webamstertools to not only ensure your site can be crawled but to also ensure you comply with Googles guidelines and improve your sites ranking.

Caching your Site

One of the major advantaged I find with Google caching the content of your website is that if you ever mistakenly save over your index.html page on either your main website or one of it’s subfolders your can retrieve that data without to much hassle through Googles Webmaster Tools.

1. Log into your Webmaster Tools Account.

2. Click on Statistics on the left hand side panel.

3. Click on Index Stats.

4. Then on

cache: The current cache of your site cache:yourdomain.com

Why Dominate Google?

Tags: ,

In case your new to this whole thing (internet in general) or simply in denial about the facts; Google is the Number 1, Greatest, Most Powerful and Well Known Search engine there is. A simple expression of this is shown by the use of two little words; “Google It”. Have you heard of anyone legitimately say the term “Yahoo It”? or “MSN Search It”?… Probably not. Google is so popular that it has become one of those brands synonymous with the thing it was designed for. Similar to the term “Photoshop It” when relating to image manipulation. Google is so powerful in fact that they own “Earth” (get it? – if not just type in Google Earth into Google).

Now I don’t want to sound like Google’s press agent but I just want to stress the value of utilising Google to your own ends. If you properly utilise Google then you can get serious exposure to your site. That in turn leads to all kinds of positive outcomes.

A couple of ways to “dominate Google” are as follows:

Number One;-
Google Adwords – Google Adwords is a great tool to use to get your site seen on relevant sites or on relevant search terms via a small text, image or video ad. This type of advertising can be a little pricey but if you know how to use it then it can be real effective.

Number Two;-
Organic Search Results – Plain and simply this is the best way to get exposure for your site.  If you get your site on the first page of Google then you are practically guaranteed to get tonnes of targeted traffic to your site. The problem is that everyone wants this and there s a lot of completion. It can take many months of hard work to get your site anywhere near the top of Google and that’s if you actually know what you’re doing. If you don’t then you can basically forget this technique until you’ve learned how it works. The best part about this is that you can do it (usually) for free or for very cheap because it all involves your own personal effort.

Number Three;-
Pay Someone To Do It For You – This sounds so incredibly appealing, and it is. The only problem (for most) is that it can cost up to and over $30,000 for only a few keyword terms. If you can spare $30,000 or more then by all means do this but for the vast majority it isn’t really a viable option.

Number Four;-
Pray Really Hard – This is in no way a scientific method but you never know, a miracle may just happen for you.

These are the most obvious methods to dominate Google. Remember it is very important not to try and trick Google into ranking your site high. Even if you were able to do so it surely wouldn’t last long. Google would eventually find you and wouldn’t be very happy with what you had done.

Always try to keep your site relevant, interesting and informative on the subject which you promote it on. For example if you promote it as a site to care for trees, don’t have the site be totally about avionics. Keep the content relevant. You can have some other stuff on there too but try to keep the main focus obvious and coherent.

In short, if you want to be successful online then you should seriously consider trying to as popular as possible on Google. it’s a gold mine just waiting to happen!

My main professional interest is my business, one of the few Legitimate Online Business that are available. I love having the freedom to work how I want to work. To me there is no substitute.

Google Signals the End of Link Exchanges?

Tags: , , ,

This weekend, google changed it’s webmaster guidelines to remove the line ‘Have other relevant sites link to yours.’ – does this mean that the google axe is about to fall on link exchanges?

There has been a lot of speculation in the SEO industry and online forums regarding two very specific changes in the Google webmaster guidelines . The guidelines have been changed to remove two key bullet points. these are:

1. Have other relevant sites link to yours.
2. Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

The SEO experts have known for quite some time that Google’s policy on paying for links on high ranking pages meant that both the page containing the link and the page which is linked to may be penalised in some way (this could mean that there is the possiblity that you could pay for links to your competitors websites in order to downgrade their ranking, but this supposition has yet to be proved.). Now it appears that just having a links directory on  your website could be bad news.

The official line from google is:

some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site’s ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:

Links intended to manipulate PageRank Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging (“Link to me and I’ll link to you.”) Buying or selling links that pass PageRank

source: google webmaster guidelines – 5/10/2008

In the current guidelines above, the main points to note are ‘links intended to manupulate pagerank’ – which means that if you have a links page that is just there to increase page rank, then you are in violation of the guidelines. The second point regarding link farms and bad neighbourhoods has long been understood to be bad for business and just about and search enginer optimiser (be it person or software) will be sure to avoid such dodgy ground.

The third point ‘excessive reciprocal links or link exchanging’ poses an interesting question – how do you define ‘excessive’ – it this more than 100 links on a single page? is it based on a ratio of outgoing to incoming links? is it X links per site divided by the number of pages in that site? I have yet to discover a definitive answer.

the relevency of clause 3 (as it shall hitherto be referred in this article) means that directories such as DMOZ which is purely used by webmasters to improve trustrank and pagerank – how many referrals from DMOZ have you ever had? In 5 years of SEO and millions of google referrals, I can count the number of DMOZ referrals on two hands. Therefore, perhaps google is reflecting this fact in its ranking changes, and DMOZ is no longer as important to them. Similarly Yahoo directory, which is a paid for link exchange facility violates the 4th clause – but has yet to be penalised in google’s index.

A response to the issue from google appears on the google forums :

“This line was removed because we feel that you should not “force” other sites to link to yours. Obviously it’s good that sites link to each other, it’s fine to encourage that on your sites to link out and to make it easy for them to link to yours. However, I don’t think we need to make it a part of the guidelines that you should “have other sites link to yours” — they should be willing to do that on their own, it should be their decision not yours. “

Does this mask the position that google would rather links were made for the sake of enhancing user experience of the web rather than to manipulate search engine positions? Possibly, but in a world where the difference between being on page 1 and page 2 of google can mean a difference in millions of dollars worth of online sales, then there will always be the need to scrabble to the top of the rankings using any means necessary.

There is also the position that having link directories, expecially niche or regional ones actually helps people find information more easily than they can in google. Human edited directories will always have better quality links that google because each entry is vetted by people to make sure the content ‘does exactly what it says on the tin’ and that misleading metatags, cloaked content, manipulated links and other measures designed to fool the algorithm will not work on an actual person. It some people’s opinion that human edited directories have more power and relevency (although are much smaller and focussed) than the google index, and penalising such efforts is just another attempt by google to be top dog in the online searching world and trample on the little guys if they get too big for their boots.

Is this the end of link exchanges then? probably not, but you should try to do the following:

you should not explicitly state that your links pages can only accept reciprocated links, allow any good website or online resource to be included in the links pages - remember your links pages should be a useful resource of related pages which enhances user experience. you should keep your links directory small of focused, and have editor approval of each link -not just automatically add them using an online form and you should review your links regularly to make sure the domain has not been taken over by link spammers. if you are using link exchange websites, make sure you are selective in which links you include and don’t whack 2000 links on your website if very few of them are relevant or useful.
